By Mark, Holland:
I was seventeen years old when visiting the 1976 concert at the Congresgebouw to worship Ritchie Blackmore, who was to me like the Archangel of rock guitar. (Jimi Hendrix being God.) I had never heard of AC/DC and Whole lot of Rosie had yet to be released in the Netherlands. I remember the concert hall was only half filled with audience and my friends and I had places at the almost empty balcony. When AC/DC started their gig I was immediately put off by the terrible sound. I suppose they weren't allowed to utilize the full potential of Rainbow's sound system. Which was a shame as well as an assault to the ears. The lighting was also very poor. As if the band was lit by just a few ordinary lightbulbs. I remember fearing to have wasted my money on this concert because I had yet to find out that Rainbow itself was not in the least hampered by bad lighting and a horrible sound. They just screwed their support act, as they would do the following year when the Dire Straits opened the concert. As for AC/DC I can say the reception was rather cool, to put it mildly. Apart from a few obvious fans at the front of the stage there was not much of a positive response as I recall. There was even some booing and I remember being shocked and disgusted by members in the midst of the audience throwing beer cans and beer bottles at the stage. I believe the bass player even had to dodge because of a bottle that ended against an amplifier beside him. Personally I now know that I was too shallow minded then to comprehend the quality of AC/DC as a band and Angus Young as a guitarist. I had a fixed image of what a guitar hero was supposed to look like and Ritchie Blackmore, classy, mysterious, wild and virtuoso fitted in perfectly and even exceeded my expectations when he elegantly smashed his guitar at the end of the show. I only recognized the beauty of Angus Young maniacally duck walking across the stage like being possessed by pure rock and roll when Thunderstruck became a hit. Only than I realized I witnessed something special in 1976 but was too blind to see at the time. Now I know AC/DC is one of the greatest bands ever and Angus Young is truly legend.
