By Fab Cal, Byron Bay NSW Australia:
In was 24 years old. Viv Lee's, later to head Big Day Out in Australia and NZ, took me to this gig. My memory, if its correct, was of a small weatherboard hall. I had seen the band a few years earlier in their initial glory days, playing to a packed Coburg Town Hall. But in 1976 they temporarily had fallen out of favour and punters were thin on the floor. Hard to believe, but the Rosebud hall had plenty of empty space. But the now recently deceased Michael Gudinski of Mushroom Records fame was there with a bunch of his friends and business associates taking an interest in the band they loved and were committed to reviving. At least that's how I remembered it.
We get there early and Bon Scott is in the middle of a game of pool at a billiard table. Eventually the band takes to the stage, minus Bon, who gestures, cue in hand, that they start playing without him. Undisturbed, the band riffs out alone while we stand around the pool table watching Bon pot the last of his balls. Eventually he strides across the room, climbs onto the stage and nonchalantly grabs the vocal microphone. It's a long way to the top if you want to rock 'n' roll!
